This Week at LangSoc

We have a ton of events going on this week due to Refresher’s week funding and stuff. If you get the emails and you’re in the facebook group, you probably know this already. Otherwise, here is what we have lined up. All of these events can be found on the facebook page.

We have a series of events under the banner of ‘Liquid Language’: exploring the ways we describe and talk about different popular drinks.

Monday 17 January* : ‘Coffee, Concepts & Communication’
13:30 – 16:30 : Teviot Study (previously called Terrace Bar)
Join us for a coffee and a catch up whilst exploring the language used to describe the tastes and qualities of different varieties from around the world. Information on tasting will be provided along with Artisan Roastcoffee!
*Note that some of our flyers already in circulation have a typo and say ‘Mon 19 Jan’.

Wednesday 19 January: Bart de Boer at the Soap Vox Lecture Series

18:00-23:00 : Appleton Tower 2 followed by Assembly

Bart de Boer, a renowned phonetician and phonologist who has done a lot of work on the self-organisation of vowel systems will be coming to give us a talk! This is our first international lecturer coming in on this series, and it promises to be great. Afterwards, drink, food, and chat at Assembly, as always…
Thursday 20 January : ‘Saussurean Connoisseurians’
18:00 – 23:00 : Teviot Loft Bar
Savour the Sausurean signs we use to describe wines and whiskys and get creative with phonetic cocktails! Samples of wines and spirits will be available, along with tasting advice, to get your evening of connoisseuring started.
We encourage responsible drinking; you will need to keep your senses to fully appreciate the tasting experience!

Friday 21 January : ‘Discourse DiversiTEA’
13:00 – 16:00 : Teviot Dining Room
Afternoon-tea with a difference: drink up tea-time terminology and steep yourself in tea’s linguistic history. With specialist teas from around the world provided (sourced from Anteaques) and tasting tutorials from SocieTEA.

Important information regarding EUSA’s printed Student Festival booklet: this contains errors regarding the times of each event. Monday’s states 19:00 – 21:00, Thursday’s 19:00 – 23:00 and Friday’s 12:00 – 15:00. We will therefore endeavour to be at each venue at times that match both versions, e.g. on Friday we will be at the venue from 12:00 – 16:00 to make sure all who want to attend get a chance to.

This means there will be an additional pub/ social/ discussion night in Teviot this Monday, from 19:00 onwards; we will have Scrabble and decaf Artisan Roast for anyone who turns up!
